Bentley Urban Farm (BUF) is an award winning upcycled market garden based in Bentley, Doncaster. We use reclaimed materials to repair and maintain a former horticultural training centre, turning it into a growing project capable of providing affordable, fresh, healthy, local food whilst creating new opportunities for education, training, skill-sharing, employment and entrepreneurship. As well as growing food for people, we grow habitats for our wilder friends. Ecology and rewilding is central to what we do. Come down and watch the dragonflies and, if you’re really lucky, the peregrine while you pick your tomatoes!
BUF is a grassroots project created by local people who love Doncaster, but our region has more than its fair share of problems, particularly when it comes to health and food. We have the second highest obesity rate in the country, high levels of food poverty and despite being surrounded by farmland our towns and villages are ‘food deserts’. In Bentley a staggering 94% of us live within walking distance of a fast-food outlet, but there isn’t a single greengrocers in the town. It is literally easier to buy kebabs than kale!
But Doncaster has one of the best micro-climates in the north of England, suitable for growing a wide range of fruit and veg; it has an award winning food market; and some amazing local food producers and companies. Donny should be a celebrated foodie paradise… and we’re working to make sure that it is.
